ABARES project: 115063-43590. This classification system has been applied to Northland in the absence of an equivalent classification system for application in New Zealand. It provides a three-level hierarchy of land-use information with six primary classes of land use that are distinguished in order of generally increasing levels of intervention or potential impact on the natural landscape. 1. Conservation and Natural Environments: Land is used primarily for conservation purposes, based on the maintenance of essentially natural ecosystems already present. 2. Production from Relatively Natural Environments: Land is used mainly for primary production based on limited change to the native vegetation. 3. Production from Dryland Agriculture and Plantations: Land is used mainly for primary production, based on dryland farming systems. 4. Production from Irrigated Agriculture and Plantations: Land is used mainly for primary production, based on irrigated farming. 5. Intensive uses: Land is subject to substantial modification, generally in association with closer residential settlement, commercial or industrial uses. 6. Water: Although primarily land cover types, water features are regarded as essential to the classification. However, class 2 is not applied. ALUM can be converted to other classiifcation systems, including ANZSIC. The classification information is captured in three fields: "lu_coden" (numerical ALUM land use code, e.g. 331); "lu_code" (ALUM land use code, e.g. 3.3.1); "lu_description" (controlled description of land-use, e.g. "Cereals"). In addition, other attributes are captured according to the ALUM schema and controlled vocabularies: - Commodity type, a controlled vocabulary of terms to describe commodities of agricultural systems, such as horticultural crops, dairy cattle, etc. This is represented in the data structure by the field "commod_desc". - Management practice, a controlled vocabulary of terms to describe management practices of agricultural systems, such as irrigation regimes.
