Indicative Īnanga Spawning Habitat locations. Īnanga is the smallest whitebait species and there are regional rules associated with the spawning habitat.
<DIV STYLE="text-align:Left;"><DIV><DIV><P><SPAN>Īnanga is the smallest whitebait species and their populations are declining. </SPAN></P><P><SPAN>The part of waterways where tidal flows meet freshwater is a key habitat for inanga spawning. Spawning occurs in areas where high spring tides can reach, but the water isn’t too salty. During spring tides inanga can lay their eggs in vegetation high up the riverbanks, above the normal river flow height.</SPAN></P><P><SPAN>Northland Regional Council has created a map layer to indicate where these areas are likely to be. </SPAN></P><P><SPAN>The Regional Plan has restrictions on land use activities around inanga spawning sites. The following activities may not be permitted and may require a consent:</SPAN></P><UL><LI><P><SPAN>Stock access</SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>Land preparation</SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>Earthworks</SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>Drainage and flood controls from 1 March to 30 September </SPAN></P></LI><LI><P><SPAN>Restoration of natural flows</SPAN></P></LI></UL><P><SPAN>You can use the new map layer to help identify whether you may have inanga spawning sites on your land. </SPAN></P><P><SPAN>The map layer is available on NRC Local Maps at: XXX URL</SPAN></P><P><SPAN /></P><P><SPAN>This layer is indicative only and was produced by processing 1) Coastal Flood Hazard Zone 3 (100 years + Rapid SLR Scenario) and 2) Current - Mangrove and Saltmarsh Area (saltmarsh extent only)</SPAN></P><P><SPAN /></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
